This is a behind the scene article about
SR Motorsports and Ray Lochhead. Ray originally started
his company in 1991 racing his Rotary Powered Dune buggy
at Sears Point International Race Way. I remember being
there and watching him break, rear ends, trannys, axles
and blow up turbos. I was quite impressed by the amount
of horse power he made with the little 12A motor he had
in that car. I think he was running some 12 sec. quarter
mile times back then. After being restricted by the many
safety rules and breaking more parts, he decided to build
a stock body 1985 RX7.
When he was first building this car it started out looking
like a brown turd that he got from a junk yard. After
a few months of tuning his Tech II, New T04 Turbo and
stock motor it was then worthy of a new paint job! The
image here you see is a burn out he made after he finished
building the Mazda. He ran a 10.10sec. quarter mile in
this pass. The fastest car at the show! This must of been
in about 1994. He then realized the potiential of his
new project and his dune buggy was growing spider webs
on it.
Making
horsepower was not a issue for Ray. It was getting the
power on the floor that was a challenge. The stock rear
end was not holding up to all the power he was making
in his stock chassis RX7. This is where he had to make
a decision! He ended up putting a 4 link into the Stock
Mazda Body! And what a difference it made. With his first
several passes and minior adjustments he was in the 9
sec. quarter mile range.
There will soon be a write up on his 3rd
gen Mazda RX7, which will include unscene pictures of
the chasis build up.
